Vegetation is represented by herbaceous-rich and acid mountain beech forests, in high-altitude localities indigenous spruce, alpine coenosis and raised bogs dominate. Dwarf pine is not one of the indigenous woody species and does not occur here. This is the consequence of the immensely rich biodiversity of some localities in the alpine zone. The area contains the richest botanical locality in the Czech Republic, Velká Kotlina, which contains about 450 plant super-species.
The Jeseníky Mountains are one of the few Czech mountains, where lynxes perpetually live. In the last decade also bear and wolfish spoors were found there. The mountains are also congrous for many rare kinds of Burda and insect – especially butterflies and spiders. Old mines are important for a lot of sorts of bats. Chamoises also live in the Jeseníky Mountains. They were imported from the Alps at the beginning of 20 century.
